WILMINGTON, Del. (Apr. 5, 2019) - The Queens College women's tennis team made a regional statement on Friday (Apr. 5) by overpowering Goldey-Beacom and knocking back the Lightning in a 6-1 decision at the Delcastle Tennis Center in Wilmington, Del.
Queens (13-3) picked up the doubles point after winning the second and third tandems of play.
Marisa Ostoja and
Laura Ortega Jover earned a 6-1 triumph at No. 3 against Alma Garcia Valle and Kristin Radeke while
Louisa Brunetti and
Anica Knezevic clinched the point at the second-tandem with a 6-2 victory against Manuela Cornejo and Maria Bruno. The heavyweight bout at the top-tandem of doubles play went to the hosts, however, as the fifteenth-ranked team of Lotte Lesscher Y Post and Catarina Zheng (2019 ITA East Region doubles finalists) dispatched of No. 30
Reehan Rashad and
Luisa Auffarth in a 6-3 decision.
The Knights then swept nearly every singles match, winning Nos. 2-6 in straight sets. This included a 6-4, 6-1 win for Auffarth over Zheng at the second flight; a 6-1, 6-3 victory by Ostoja at third-singles against Elin Anderson;Â Brunetti's 6-1, 6-1 dispatching of Garcia Valle at No. 4; Ortega Jover winning 6-2, 6-2 against Anna Hortelano Pey at fifth-singles; and
Ruth Artaza Martin's sixth-flight triumph over Andrea Fresneda by scores of 6-2 and 6-4.
The Knights will conclude their regular season of matches on Apr. 20 with a 12 p.m. date against Division I Stony Brook out in Suffolk County.
