FLUSHING, N.Y. (Mar. 23, 2019) - The Queens College men's tennis team opened up East Coast Conference play on Saturday (Mar. 23) with a 7-0 victory against District of Columbia at the QC Tennis Center.
The Knights had an advantage going into the afternoon, as UDC's five-man roster gave QC a victory at both sixth-singles and third-doubles. This meant that Queens started the day with a 1-0 lead and needed to win just one doubles tilt to go up by a 2-0 score. The hosts did just that as
Jose Zurro and
Mariano Biblioni won a 6-0 decision at second-doubles over Maksim Bahdamovich and Jake Bedforth. The top pair of
Cosme Jubera and
Lucas Demuth also claimed a victory, sending down Drew Stewart and Konstantin Kalchev via a 6-2 decision.
Queens rolled into singles play and won each bout with the Firebirds in convincing fashion. Zurro dispatched of Bedforth at fourth-singles by a 6-0, 6-0 score which was the same final for Stan Bedrune at fifth-singles against Wilson Cano. Demuth claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win over Drew Stewart in the third flight while
Kareem Rashad took home a 6-2, 6-4 win against Bahdamovich. Jubera had a gritty 7-5, 6-2 win at the top-flight of singles against Kalchev to provide the final margin.
Queens will continue East Coast Conference play when the Knights take on Saint Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday (Mar. 27) at 12 p.m. at the QC Tennis Center.
