FLUSHING, N.Y. (Mar. 20, 2019) - The Queens College softball team nearly earned a doubleheader split with Pace University on Wednesday (Mar. 20), falling in the second game of the afternoon by a 5-2 score at the QC Softball Complex in Flushing. The effort came after the Knights were beaten by a 10-0 score in five innings with the Setters in the opening contest of the day.
Game One: Pace 10, Queens (NY) 0 - Five Innings
The Knights struggled on offense in the opening game, as the squad was no-hit by Setter starter Emma Bernet.Â
Sharina Nazario appeared to break up the no-hit bid in the fifth inning, but the freshman reached base on an error at first base. Pace, meanwhile, put up a four-run first inning against QC starter
Emma Wimmer (with two runs being unearned) and then another six runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Bernet struck out eight batters in the circle for the Setters to pick up the win and the no-no, yielding just two base-runners which included Nazario's reaching on the error and a walk to
Gabriella Vicidomini as well.
Game Two: Pace 5, Queens (NY) 2
In the second game, the Knights took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a productive at-bat by
Noelle Bryggman. The freshman shortstop and reigning East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week grounded out to second base with runners in scoring position, sending
Gabriella Russo home with the game's first run. QC starter
Allie Stanya tossed four shutout innings but allowed two runs in the fifth as the Setters tied the game on the base-paths with an attempted steal of second that turned into a run scoring from third base. Rachelle Seil then singled home another run to put the visitors ahead, and Pace held the lead until the sixth inning when
Marisa Sagona clobbered an RBI double to right-center to score
Danielle D'Angelo with the tying run.
In the top of the seventh, however, Pace scored three runs with Seil once again playing spoiler. Her two-out single to right field brought home Emma Carruth with the go-ahead run and Zoie Iverson's two-run double to right field sealed the victory for the Setters.
Queens will resume play on Saturday (Mar. 23)Â with a doubleheader against Franklin PIerce University in Rindge, N.H. at 1 p.m.
