WASHINGTON, D.C. (Mar. 2, 2019) -
Dwayne Henry Jr. scored 29 points and hit seven three-pointers but it was not enough to lift the Queens College men's basketball team over the University of the District of Columbia on Saturday (Mar. 2) as the Knights fell by a 75-62 decision at the UDC Sports Complex.
The loss eliminates QC from play-off contention, while the win gave UDC the six-seed in the upcoming East Coast Conference Tournament. Queens finishes the season with a 7-21 overall record and a 7-11 mark in ECC action.
Henry shot 11-for-21 from the floor, adding three rebounds and three assists while
Elijah Bovell added 12 points and seven rebounds in the effort.
Shomari Redd contributed six points off the bench with Chris Brizan having a six-rebound contest to go along with three points.
Jordan Curtis, in his final game in a collegiate uniform, pulled down four rebounds and dished out two assists.
The Knights stayed fairly close with the Firebirds throughout much of the first half as neither team led by more than five points in the opening twenty minutes of play. A jumper by Henry at the buzzer sent both teams into the locker room with UDC up by a 35-33 margin. Queens led 42-41 with three minutes gone by in the second half on a three-ball by Henry, but Danny Shand (27 points) responded with a three that gave the hosts a 44-42 edge. Free throws by Zachary Olukanni pushed UDC ahead by four points but another Henry trifecta plus a Brizan free throw evened the score at 46-all with exactly 13 minutes to play. Kerry Kirkwood traded threes with Henry after that, but Kevin Cox converted on a three-point play at the mid-point of the half to push the Firebirds ahead by a 52-49 margin. That would prove to be the difference as the hosts went on a 10-4 run with an Olukanni dunk giving the hosts a 62-53 lead with under five minutes to go; the Firebirds pushed the lead further to the final margin to close out the regular season and dash the play-off dreams of the Knights.
