WASHINGTON, D.C. (Mar. 2, 2019) - Freshman forward
Lakeisha Officer had a career-high 25 points and nine rebounds in the season finale for the Queens College women's basketball team, which ended with the Knights falling by a 66-64 decision to District of Columbia on Saturday (Mar. 2) in Washington.
The Knights end the year with a 6-20 overall record and a 5-13 mark in East Coast Conference competition.
Officer shot 70% (7-10) from the floor and hit all eleven of her free throws; in fact, the Knights were a perfect 17-for-17 from the charity stripe.
Nora Gabel added 18 points and two steals as the freshman shot 6-for-14 from the field in the effort.
Lucy Tougas added eight points and two rebounds for QC in the loss.
Kaitlyn Mahon and
Emer Moloney played a courageous final contest for the Knights and were the only two players for Queens to play the full forty minutes of action. Mahon had eight points, five rebounds and three assists while Moloney contributed two points, a rebound and four assists; the two players combined for all seven of the Knights' assists on the afternoon.
Queens played from behind to begin the contest as UDC (10-18, 7-11 ECC) opened the contest on a 20-8 run in the opening quarter, a period that the Firebirds would complete with a 22-10 lead---all ten of the Knights' points in the opening frame came from Officer. The Firebirds held a 25-10 lead on a three-pointer from Natasha Roy before the Knights scored the next seven points in a row---five of them coming from Gabel. UDC responded with an 8-2 run and the Firebirds went into the locker room with a 40-30 lead. To this point, Officer was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor and hit all six of her free throws to lead all scorers with 16 points.
Officer continued her incredible game with QC's first four points as the Knights trailed by just seven points at 41-34 in the opening minute of the third quarter until Maya Thomas hit a three-pointer to bump UDC ahead by double digits. The Knights would trail by a 52-43 margin with three-and-a-half minutes to go in the frame before the defense held the Firebirds off the scoreboard as a 9-0 run commenced to even the score at 52-all going into the fourth quarter. Officer had five points in the run while Gabel contributed four points as well. UDC re-built a 60-56 lead until buckets by Mahon and Gabel evened the score. Tougas scored on a field goal to give QC a 62-60 lead at the mid-point of the quarter but Roy would hit a three-pointer with under four minutes to go that would give the hosts the lead for good. After a lay-up by Patricia Albert pushed UDC up by three points, Moloney hit a pair of free throws with less than a minute remaining. The Firebirds got one more free throw from Roy with four seconds remaining, and Mahon's potential game-tying jumper at the horn was off the mark.
