MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Mar. 14, 2019) - After a 4-1 loss to Barry on Thursday (Mar. 14), the Queens College softball team scored six unanswered runs in the second game of a doubleheader to knock off the Buccaneers by a 6-3 score and earn a split of the evening's contests at Feinbloom Field.
Game One: Barry 4, Queens (NY) 1
Noelle Bryggman led off the first game with a single, continuing her torrid start to the season for the Knights. However, the freshman was caught stealing as Queens went scoreless in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the frame, Barry would go ahead on one pitch as Andrea Johnson sent an
Allie Stanya offering over the left-field wall. Queens did not respond against Buccaneers starter Gabby Vallee, as the Knights could only muster six hits in total.
Katherine Gallagher singled home the Knights' lone run in the top of the seventh inning as
Rachel Katz came around to score; Vallee would limit the damage and the Buccaneers claimed the first game of the doubleheader.
Gallagher had a team-best two hits while Bryggman,
Danielle D'Angelo,
Lauren Pascual and
Sharina Nazario each added one hit for the Knights as well.
Game Two: Queens (NY) 6, Barry 3
In the second game, Queens utilized some quick thinking on the base-paths to score the game's first run. After Bryggman led the game off with a single, she reached second base on a sacrifice bunt by
Gabriella Vicidomini and then advanced to third on a hit by Nazario. With runners on the corners and only one out, D'Angelo came to the plate but she became a spectator to the action on the bases. Nazario took off for second base and as she was being tagged out in between the bases, Bryggman scampered home with the game's first run.
Bryggman played a part in the Knights' third inning, leading off the frame with a single. After Vicidomini walked, Katz drove home both runs with a single to put QC ahead by a 3-0 score. Queens put up a three-spot in the fifth inning with Bryggman leading the charge once again. The freshman drew a leadoff walk and scored on Pascual's second pinch-hit single of the evening; Gallagher then singled down the left-field line to bring home Vicidomini and D'Angelo to give Queens a 6-0 lead.Â
Barry scored a run in each of the final three innings, but QC starter
Emma Wimmer went the distance and picked up the win with a six-strikeout performance. Bryggman went 3-for-3 with three runs scored to lead the offensive charge.
Queens will conclude its Florida trip on Friday (Mar. 15) with a 10 a.m. contest versus Barry in Miami Shores.
