FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Mar. 13, 2019) - Sophomore catcher
Jessica Hickey recorded an RBI single in the second game of a doubleheader for the Queens College softball team on Wednesday (Mar. 13) against Nova Southeastern University but the Knights were unable to capitalize on that momentum to pick up a split in the two-game series in Fort Lauderdale. The Sharks scored a 12-0 win in the first game of the double-dip and took the nightcap by an 8-0 scoreline.
Game One: Nova Southeastern 12, Queens (NY) 0 - Five Innings
The Knights fell behind after NSU scored nine runs in the bottom of the first inning, with the big blow being Sydney Lageyre's inside-the-park grand slam that sent the Sharks to a 9-0 lead. Queens was unable to recover, only mustering one hit in the contest (a third-inning single by
Danielle D'Angelo).
Noelle Bryggman was the only other Knight to reach base, as she drew a walk in the third inning as well.
Game Two: Nova Southeastern 8, Queens (NY) 1
Bryggman led off the contest with an infield single, but the Knights could not push home a run in the top of the first inning against NSU. It was the second frame, however, where the Knights' offense got things going. After D'Angelo singled up the middle and
Rachel Katz reached on an error, a sacrifice bunt by
Marisa Sagona put two QC runners in scoring position for Hickey. The sophomore smacked a pitch into right-center field to drive in D'Angelo and put Queens ahead by a 1-0 score. In the bottom of the inning, QC starter
Emma Wimmer got two quick outs but the Sharks started a two-out rally that was capped by a Kayla Kight two-RBI triple to put the hosts up by a 2-1 score. Nova Southeastern would score six more times in the ensuing two innings to provide the final margin.
Queens returns to action on Thursday (Mar. 14) to face off with Barry University in a doubleheader in Miami Shores. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
