FLUSHING, N.Y. (Feb. 14, 2019) - The Queens College men's tennis team had its hearts broken on Valentine's Day, as the Knights could not hang on to a lead on Thursday (Feb. 14) and fell to Division I Fairleigh Dickinson by a 4-3 score at the Queens College Tennis Center.
In this installment of the Battle of the Knights, it was QC who took the early lead thanks to two victories in doubles play to open the match. The top tandem of
Cosme Jubera and
Lucas Demuth claimed a 6-4 win on Mehdi Dhouib and Andris Gudins to clinch the point for Queens. Nick Volos and
Mariano Biblioni posted a 6-4 win at third-singles over Ivan Solans Diaz and Eduardo Cabral first to put the Knights of Queens within striking distance. FDU's second tandem won a 6-4 decision over
Jose Zurro and
Kareem Rashad to set up the winner-take-point match-up at the top tandem.
Rashad got things going in singles play for QC as he rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 win in the third flight of singles play against Moric Budinsky, giving Queens a 2-0 edge. Fairleigh Dickinson returned a point at fifth-singles with Solans Diaz besting Biblioni (4-6, 0-6) but Volos gutted out a 7-6 (13-11), 6-4 win at sixth-singles over Cabral to put Queens one point away from the overall match victory. The final three singles matches, however, would go to the visitors and would all go to three sets. Zurro fll in fourth singles to Maciej Autuch by a 4-6, 6-3, 2-6 count and Demuth was defeated at the No. 2 flight by Gudins (3-6, 6-3, 3-6). Dhouib and Jubera battled in the No. 1 spot of singles to decide the match, and the Division I foe bested QC's top singles player via a 4-6, 6-1, 3-6 decision.
Queens will continue its season next Saturday (Feb. 23) with a 6 p.m. home match against Wagner.
