Raiana Brown had a team-high 15 points for the Queens College women's basketball team on Wednesday (Nov. 27) but the Knights succumbed to a strong shooting performance from Post University as the Eagles won a 73-52 contest at Lucille Kyvallos Court at Fitzgerald Gymnasium. The Knights fell to 1-6 on the year while the Eagles improved their overall record to 4-2 on the season.
Brown added six rebounds and two steals while shooting 7-for-10 (70%) from the floor in the contest.
Lucy Tougas posted an 11-point effort with six boards and five assists along with a team-high four steals.
Brianne Moxley and
Zorria West both contributed seven points for QC while
Nora Gabel had six points off the bench to add to the scoring account.
Sha'Raya Haines and Taylor Williams led Post with 22 points apiece; Haines added 10 rebounds while Williams collected six boards, five assists, two blocks and two steals. Tai Pagan poured in ten points with 15 rebounds and three blocks as Hannah Benac chipped in ten points for the Eagles in the win.
The visitors raced out to a 22-13 lead in the first quarter, with Post hitting 8-of-13 (62%) from the floor over the opening ten minutes of play. The Eagles actually held a 27-13 advantage in the early stages of the second quarter before cooling off as Queens went on a lengthy run to get back within striking distance. Back-to-back buckets by Brown started a 16-4 run that included a three-pointer from
Tayanee Peay as the Knights reached a two-point deficit at 31-29 with three minutes to play in the half. Queens trailed 37-33 at the halftime break after Post's Jaeonna Sutton ended the frame with an off-balance jumper in the paint. The third quarter, however, swung the game to the Eagles entirely as Post shot 64% (9-14) from the floor while QC hit just 3-of-23 from the field.
The Knights shot 30% (21-70) from the field as a whole in the contest while Post hit 49% (28-57) of its shots from the floor. The Eagles also won the rebounding battle by a 42-28 margin but the visitors committed more turnovers (20) than the Knights (15).
Queens returns to action on Wednesday (Dec. 4) when the Knights head up to Springfield, Mass. to face the Yellow Jackets of American International College. Tip-off from Bulova Gymnasium is set for 5:30 p.m.
