SYRACUSE, N.Y. (Nov. 16, 2019) - The Queens College women's basketball team kept pace with one of the region's best on Saturday (Nov. 16) as the Knights were in a battle with Le Moyne College all the way to the end of an 80-66 contest at Ted Grant Court in Syracuse.
Queens is now 1-3 on the season while Le Moyne---who was an NCAA East Region finalist a season ago---improves to 2-2 on the year.
Raiana Brown continued an impressive start to her freshman season with her first career double-double (game-highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds) to lead the way for the Knights. Meanwhile, junior guard
Zorria West added 14 points, six rebounds and three assists as rookie
Brianne Moxley chipped in with 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Freshman three-point specialist
Harmony Philo was perfect on trifectas (3-3) on the afternoon and added 11 points for the Knights as sophomore guard
Nora Gabel compiled seven points and six rebounds.
Cameron Tooley had 16 points off the bench for the host Dolphins and Liz Millea added 15 for Le Moyne in the win.
The Knights were in the throes of a back-and-forth during the opening stages of the contest, with Moxley leading a 6-0 run midway through the opening quarter to put the Knights up by a 15-12 margin with two-and-a-half minutes to go. Le Moyne, however, ended that frame on a 10-2 run to lead 22-17 going into the second period of play. The Dolphins led by as many as 13 points in the second thanks to a Tooley three-ball with just under four minutes until halftime giving the hosts a 36-23 lead; Queens would fight back on a 7-0 run with a bucket by
Chidinma Ndukauba starting the spurt and a three-ball from Philo bringing the Knights within a 36-30 deficit at halftime. The Knights would get within a possession in the third quarter, trailing 38-35 after a fastbreak lay-up by West with two-plus minutes gone by in the frame. Le Moyne, though, always seemed to have an answer and the Dolphins ended up leading by a 62-54 margin before holding Queens to a 12-point fourth quarter to earn the tough victory.
The Knights shot 44% (26-59) from the floor and held Le Moyne to around 45% (34-75) from the field. The teams were mirror images in rebounding (39-39) and Queens scored 40 points in the paint to the Dolphins' 42, but the hosts took QC's 16 turnovers and converted them into 21 points while the Knights only managed 10 points on eight Dolphins giveaways.
Queens will play its first game at home on Wednesday (Nov. 20) at 5 p.m. against Southern New Hampshire University at Lucille Kyvallos Court at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
