Second-Half Comeback Leads Men's Soccer to Draw with Bridgeport

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Oct. 19, 2019) - Trailing at the halftime break by two goals, the Queens College men's soccer team played a desperate pace to equalize the score with Bridgeport on Saturday (Oct. 19) as the two sides battled to a 2-2 draw at Knights Field in an ECC contest. Queens is now 5-4-2 overall and 2-2-1 in East Coast Conference action while Bridgeport moved to 7-4-1 and 3-1-1 in league play.

How It Happened
  • A handball call in the penalty area in the third minute of action led to UB's Erlend Skagestad beating keeper Marek Strzelczyk from the spot to put the visitors ahead with an early 1-0 lead.
  • Queens had a golden opportunity to level terms in the 28th minute but a header by Paul Hayes rocketed off the under-side of the crossbar and somehow managed to stay outside of the goal.
  • Bridgeport struck for an insurance marker in the 41st-minute as Lucas Santos's looping clearance on the near sideline found its way to substitute Yoel Salvador, who rocketed a right-footed dart past Strzelczyk and into the net.
  • Santos was nearly true on a good attempt in the 53rd-minute for UB, as he spiraled a right-footed shot in space towards the goal off a corner; Strzelczyk parried away the attempt.
  • Romario Hulea got the Knights on the board in the 64th minute after several strong passes from Cristian Villalta and Leo Pinto gave the senior forward a tap-in goal past Bridgeport goalie Carlos Tofern.
  • Five minutes later, Hulea volleyed home a rebound off a Villalta shot to equalize at 2-all.
  • Santos and Salvador had two excellent chances to put UB back in front towards the end of regulation but neither could beat Strzelczyk.
  • The Purple Knights had the best chances in the first overtime and vice versa in the second extra session for Queens, but no more goals would be scored.
Knights That Shined
  • For the game, the Knights out-shot the Purple Knights by a 23-14 margin although both teams had nine attempts on goal.
  • Hulea's two goals came on five total shots off the bench while Villalta led all QC starters with four shots in the game.
  • Emgi Gousse and Kevin Quituizaca both had three shots in the contest as well.
  • Strzelczyk made seven saves in the game, leaving some of his best deflections for the later stages of overtime.
