FLUSHING, N.Y. (Oct. 16, 2019) - As the rains fell on Knights Field in Flushing Wednesday (Oct. 16), the Queens College women's soccer team lit up the scoreboard and posted a 12-0 victory in conference play over Lincoln (Pa.) to get the Knights their first East Coast Conference victory.
Queens improved to 7-6 on the season and 1-3 in ECC action while Lincoln fell to 1-8 overall and 0-4 in league competition.
How It Happened
- Queens went on the early attack as Sara Messemer scored the game's first goal in the opening half-minute of action. The Knights led 4-0 after ten minutes of play with additional goals coming from Shannon Gibbons, Sarah Marino and Agnes Stanton.
- Messemer recorded her second goal of the game with thirteen minutes gone by in the half before Ana Vera Vazquez, Victoria Ramirez and Sthefany Ballesteros rounded out the first-half scoring. Ramirez had a pair of goals in the first half to boost Queens to a 9-0 lead after the first half.
- Stanton netted her second goal of the game in the ensuing half, with Nicole Jones and Nicole Abalco also putting shots home past Lincoln goalie Lena Rodriguez (23 saves, recording her 500th career stop in the contest) as the Knights sealed the 12-goal win.
Knights That Shined
- It is the first time that the Knights have scored ten or more goals in a contest since Sept. 26, 2011; ironically, QC won a 14-0 decision over the same Lions of Lincoln on that day.
- Ramirez took 15 total shots in the game, nine of which were on target.Â
- Stanton posted a seven-point afternoon with two goals and three assists in the victory. The Knights lit up the assist count with 12 helpers to 12 goals.
- Jennifer Hernandez had two assists off the bench while Elvira Hernandez and Victoria Castela each added a distribution to their scoring statistics.
- Nikoletta Pravata and Ariana Vargas combined for the shutout, as the goalies faced just two shots (zero targets) while Queens put 60 efforts towards the Lions' cage.
