FLUSHING, N.Y. (Jan. 30, 2019) –
Dwayne Henry, Jr. and
Keenan Gorski combined for 42 points and went a total of 20-for-22 from the free-throw line as the Queens College men's basketball team built up an insurmountable edge in the first half on its way to a 74-64 win over NYIT on Wednesday (Jan. 30) at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
Henry's game-high 22 points came off the bench, as the sophomore guard contributed seven rebounds in the win and also posted a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line for Queens (5-15, 5-5 ECC). Gorski added 20 points and went 12-for-14 from the charity stripe.
Tyrese Crosdale added six points, seven rebounds and two assists while
Jordan Curtis contributed a team-high eight boards and
Evan Goldberg added six defensive rebounds on a night when Queens dominated the glass with a plus-11 margin (47-36) in rebounding.
NYIT (2-17, 2-8 ECC) had four players in double figures with Zahir Porter's 15 setting the high mark for the Bears in the loss. Collins Onyeike and Kieran Hamilton added 14 points apiece and Marcus Saint-Furcy contributed 12 points for the visitors.
The Knights opened up the game on a 10-4 run with Gorski book-ended the spurt with three-pointers; save for NYIT tying the score at 10-all, Queens never trailed the rest of the way through the contest. Queens led 23-13 at one point in the first half, and the advantage swelled to 42-28 at the halftime break. The Bears chipped away in the second half, coming within a two-point deficit at 45-43 following a Hamilton treble until Henry went on an 8-0 personal run to up the lead back to double-digits at 53-43 with nine minutes gone by in the period. NYIT made two more efforts to get back on level terms in the second half, but Queens continued to score one extra basket to outlast the charge from the visitors.
QC will be in action on Saturday (Feb. 2) as the Knights head to Brookville to face LIU Post at 3:30 p.m.
