Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Queens College men's basketball team won its second consecutive East Coast Conference game, outlasting NYIT 84-78 in overtime Wednesday evening at FitzGerald Gymnasium.
Junior guard Tyree White, the reigning ECC Player of the Week, led four Knights in double figures with 21 points, and grabbed 11 rebounds to pick up his seventh double-double of the season. The nation's co-leader in the category, White also finished with five steals in the contest.
Senior Travis Whitfield finished with a season-high 19 points, while junior Diego Maldonado scored 17 points, going a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe in the process. Off the bench, senior Paul Little finished with 10 points.
Despite being outshot 41.7% to 38.3 from the field, the Knights held an impressive 46-28 advantage on points in the paint in the game, and turned 18 NYIT turnovers into 19 points. The team also registered 20 second chance points, 14 points off the fast break, and outrebounded the Bears 56-43.
The Bears pushed the tempo early, grabbing a 17-8 lead with 11:26 left in the opening frame. The Knights answered back with an 18-9 charge, knotting the game at 26 with 5:49 remaining in the first half. Little later connected on a jumper in the final minute to even the score at 35 at intermission.
In a game that featured 13 ties, and 16 lead changes, Queens grabbed its biggest lead, 55-48, with 10:45 remaining in the second half on a free throw by senior Mohamed Dansoko. The Bears answered with a 14-5 surge, taking a 62-60 advantage with 6:42 left in the frame.
Trailing 68-65, the Knights evened the game on a triple by Maldonado with 1:17 on the clock. NYIT's Khalif Chaplin answered with a jumper with 55 seconds remaining to regain the lead, before White sent the game into extra time with a layup with 33 seconds left.
In overtime, the two teams remained within one possession of each other before a layup by Little, and a pair of free throws by Maldonado gave QC an 82-77 lead with 45 seconds remaining. NYIT was unable to get within four the rest of the way, before two more free throws by Maldonado gave Queens a six-point advantage in the final 15 seconds.
NYIT connected on just one of six attempts from the field in overtime, while the Knights went 5-for-8 during the five minute stanza. Chaplin led the Bears with a game-high 36 points, while Jerrel Green contributed 21 points and 10 rebounds.
