Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College women's basketball team gave conference-leading NYIT all it could handle in Wednesday evening's ECC contest at Fitzgerald Gymnasium before squandering a late fourth quarter lead and falling to the Bears, 61-56.
Senior guard Kristen Korzevinski led three Knights in double-digits with 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field. Madison Rowland added 13 points, nine rebounds and four steals, and Elisabeth Gully nearly notched her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Freshman guard Kaitlyn Mahon contributed seven points and seven assists in the contest, including a dramatic half court three-point heave at the end of the third quarter that pushed QC ahead 47-41 after three quarters.
Carrying the six-point lead into the fourth, the Knights could not connect offensively in the final frame. The team connected on just two of 11 attempts from the field and struggled to convert from the line as well, going 4-for-8. On the other end, NYIT found success on the inside to the tune of 14 fourth quarter points in the paint and capitalized on five QC turnovers.
Ahead for most of the game, the Knights took their largest lead early in the fourth when a three-pointer by Rowland made the score 59-50. Overall in the contest, they forced the Bears, who remain undefeated in East Coast Conference play, into 19 turnovers and limited them to only 37 percent shooting from the field.
With the loss, Queens falls to 9-5 in ECC competition and 12-8 overall. Meanwhile, the Bears improved their unblemished conference record to 15-0 and now sit at 21-5 for the season.
Up next for the Knights is Saturday's home clash with LIU Post. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30pm.
