Sparkill, N.Y. - The Knights used stingy defense and a strong second half on Wednesday to limit the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans to 48 points in a 68-48 victory. 27 Spartans turnovers led to 30 points for the Knights in the win.
Queens fell behind early, 4-0, at the host Spartans got a pair of baskets from Samantha Burden in the first 90 seconds of play. MacKenzie Rowland scored the next two baskets to even the score at 4-4.
Later in the half, and trailing 7-6, QC used a 15-2 run to take a 21-9 lead. Madison Rowland scored nine of her game-high 29 points in that stretch. MacKenzie scored four points and Kristen Korzevinski added a basket.
STAC returned the favor over the next three minutes of play, using a 9-0 run to pull within three points, at 21-18. An Amber Harrison jumper thwarted the efforts to tie the game. At the end of the half, Korzevinski made a layup to give the Knights a 36-27 lead at the half.
The score was close over the first five-and-a-half minutes of the second half until Madison Rowland buried a three-pointer to put QC ahead, 45-38. The Knights turned on the jets there and used a 14-0 run to take a 21-point lead, 59-38. Imani Davidson capped the scoring spree with a slashing layup. Queens allowed just ten points across the final nine minutes of play and went on to win 68-48.
Madison Rowland shot 12-20 to get her 29 points. MacKenzie Rowland posted a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds and shot 7-13. Korzevinski chipped in with 11 points.
The Queens College women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, February 7, when they face Mercy in Dobbs Ferry. The tip-off is slated for 12:30 PM.
