Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College women's basketball team fell to Bridgeport, 62-61 in the season finale on Saturday in Flushing, The team finished the regular-season with a 20-7 overall record and a 15-5 East Coast Conference record. The Knights controlled their own fate in the upcoming ECC playoffs; a win means the #2 seed in the conference and a first-round bye. Because of the loss, Queens might fall to third and have to host a play-in game with St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday.
QC jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first two-and-a-half minutes of play on a tip-in by Elisabeth Gully and a pair of baskets from Madison Rowland. Neither side could get a stranglehold on the game, but the Purple Knights took the lead, 17-15, at the 10:55 mark of the first half and held the lead for the next five minutes until Amber Harrison made a layup and Taylor Miller followed with a three-pointer to put Queens up, 25-22.
The Purple Knights responded by taking a seven point lead in the closing seconds of the half. MIller launched a buzzer-beating trifecta at the end of regulation and Bridgeport led at the break, 34-30.
Bridgeport got the lead up to 11 points before Queens responded. Trailing 43-32 with 16:09 left, the Knights used a 14-2 run to take a 46-45 lead at the 9:53 mark. Kristen Korzevinski scored seven of the points. Gully chipped in with four and Joya McFarland scored three. The Purple Knights tied the score, but the Knights regained the lead and got it up to four points on a MacKenzie Rowland bucket with 7:46 left.
Trailing 58-57 with 1:19 left, Madison Rowland drove along the baseline and scored on a driving layup to put QC up, 59-58. Bridgeport responded with a pair of foul shots, but Rowland put QC up 61-60 with another layup with 0:22 left. The Purple Knights took the lead on a pair of free throws and after a timeout, Rowland threw up a desperation three that missed the mark.
In the loss, Korzevinski shot 7-12 and scored 15 points. Madison Rowland had a double-double with 12 points and ten rebounds. MacKenzie finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The next game time, location and opponent will be determined by the outcome of the LIU Post - Roberts Wesleyan game on Sunday.
