Oakdale, N.Y. - The Queens College men's basketball team fell to Dowling 76-68, in an East Coast Conference game played in Oakdale, New York on Thursday. Senior Jeremiah Mordi finished with a double-double of 25 points and 12 rebounds (both game highs) and reached 1230 career points, passing QC Hall of Famer Geoff Maloney (1219) and moving into 12th place.
It was a back-and-forth game early on as neither side could gain a stranglehold on the lead. Dowling led early and didn't relinquish it until a pair of Mordi foul shots evened the score at 17-17 with 11:05 left. From there, the Golden Lions took control and got the lead up to as much as 13 points. A Mordi basket late in the first half made the score 42-33 for Dowling at the half.
The first three-and-a-half minutes of the second half saw the Knights get as close as five points, at 44-39. Travis Whitfield made a bucket and a free throw and Mordi buried a three to account for the six points. Dowling got the lead up to 17 points, 66-49, with 6:43 left.
Down 16 with 3:36 left, the Knights got hot. Diego Maldonado nailed a three, and Mordi followed with a jumper. Mordi scored eight more points and Shaquille Thomas added a basket as well. Dowling won 76-68.
The Queens College men's basketball team closes out its 2014-15 on Saturday, February 28, when they host Bridgeport at 1:30 PM. Seniors Anthony Hodges and Jeremiah Mordi will be honored in a senior day ceremony prior to tipoff.
