Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Queens College men's basketball team dropped a hard fought 71-66 decision to UDC Saturday afternoon in East Coast Conference action.
The Knights had three players in double figures, led by senior Travis Whitfield's 15 points. Junior Diego Maldonado scored 12 points while Simon Green contributed 11 points.
Junior Tyree White fell one point and two steals shy of a quadruple double, scoring nine points, and grabbing 12 boards, to go along with 11 assists and eight steals.
Despite being outshot 50.0% (25-50) to 39.7% (29-73) from the field, the Knights stayed in the contest by turning 24 Firebird turnovers into 30 points. Queens also grabbed 12 offensive rebounds and tallied nine second chance points and 48 points in the paint.
Early in the first half, QC led by as much as eight before UDC grabbed a 25-19 advantage with a 23-9 run. Trailing 32-22, the Knights closed the gap by scoring the period's final six points, trimming the deficit to four on a layup by Green, with 39 ticks remaining.
The Firebirds led by as many as 15 in the second half, as a pair of free throws gave UDC a 56-41 cushion with 9:11 left. The Knights answered back with a 25-9 run, taking a 66-65 on a pair of free throws by Maldonado with 56 seconds remaining.
QC missed its final two attempts from the field as the Firebirds went a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in the final minute to take the five point victory.
Martin Campbell led UDC with 25 points off the bench. The Knights are back in action Wednesday, Jan. 6 at home against NYIT (5:30 pm).
