Men's Basketball Falls In Final Seconds To GCU

QUEENS, N.Y. - Queens College men's basketball junior guard Tyree White picked up his second double-double of the season with 22 points and 12 rebounds in the Knights' 67-65 loss to Georgian Court Saturday afternoon at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.  Trailing by one, Juwuan Carter connected on a three with 10 seconds remaining for the game-winning basketball for the Lions.

Entering the game shooting 36.8% from behind the arc, the Knights connected on just 18.8% (3-for-16) of their attempts from behind the arc in the contest, and 61.5% (8-for-13) from the charity stripe.

Junior guard Diego Maldonado had 13 points and seven rebounds in the game, while junior guard Travis Whitfield scored 10 points off the bench.

GCU held an early 7-0 lead in the contest, before an 11-2 run by QC gave the Knights an 11-9 lead with 14:36 left in the first period.  Queens picked up its biggest lead of the period, 28-21, with 1:11 left in the frame on a layup by Whitfield.  The Lions closed the half on a 5-0 run to trim the QC lead to two, 28-26, at half.

Ahead 42-40 in the second half, the Lions scored nine straight points to take an 11 point lead, 51-40, with 10:25 remaining.  Queens responded with 17 of the next 25 points to cut the gap to 59-57, with 4:33 on the clock.

A pair of free throws by White with 1:32 left evened the game at 63, before GCU grabbed a one point advantage on a Keith Hughes free throw with 1:24 left.  A layup by White put Queens back in the driver's seat with 1:04 left, before Carter's three following timeouts by both teams gave the Lions the two point victory.

Nikola Vujovic led three GCU players in double digits with 16 points.  J.D. Rodriguez poured in 14 points and Carter finished with 13.

The Knights' next contest comes on Wednesday, Dec. 9 at St. Thomas Aquinas as the team begins the ECC portion of its slate.
