QC Volleyball Takes Five Set Match From Georgian Court

QUEENS, N.Y.  – In a rematch of an early season win over Georgian Court, the Queens College volleyball team secured another victory over the Lions, this time in a thrilling five-set match inside of Fitzgerald Gymnasium Tuesday evening.

After falling 28-26 in the first set, the Knights bounced back to take the next two sets, 25-20 and 25-18. Georgian Court leveled in the fourth with a 25-18 score before the Knights prevailed in the fifth set by the margin 15-13. Senior Arielle DiCocco was tremendous in the win, striking 25 kills and registering a .467 hitting percentage. In all, DiCocco was responsible for 30 of the Knights' points. 

Coming into the night's contest, the Lions were winners of five straight and found themselves in third place of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South standings. The Knights meanwhile were looking to rebound after a loss to Dowling College. Fueled by DiCocco's inspired play, QC also received important contributions from freshmen Nicoletta DiCocco and Malaika Hollis. N. DiCocco recorded 14 kills, while Hollis hit for 13 and chipped in 17 digs. Senior Bianca Steele struck 14 kills for the Knights as well.

Leading the team in assists was Jessica Yin. The sophomore transfer was there time and time again to set her teammates up with great services as she recorded a season-high 55 assists. 

For the Lions, Taylor Winchester led the team with 18 kills and teammate Melanee Coleman contributed 10. On the match, Queens College hit for a higher percentage than their opponents in every set outside of the first on the way to securing the victory. 

With the result, the Knights improve to 7-13 for the season, while the Lions fall to 16-12. Next up for Queens is a home clash with conference opponent Daemen on Friday, Oct. 30. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
