Bridgeport, Conn. - Queens College freshman, Madison Rowland had the game of her life in Saturday's 93-70 win at Bridgeport. The freshman posted a triple-double with 40 points, 13 rebounds and 11 steals. She scored the most points in a single game since Bria Jackson scored 49 in a double-overtime win over Bowie State in December or 2012. Rowland also moved into sixth-place in the single-season steals list for Queens College with 83 after Saturday's win.
Queens jumped out a 7-2 lead in the game as MacKenzie Rowland scored three points, Madison had a bucket and Kristen Korzevinski had two. MacKenzie Rowland posted a double-double of her own with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Bridgeport chipped away at the lead and got within two, at 11-9, before Queens responded.
QC called a timeout and following the respite, the Knights pushed their advantage to ten points, 24-14, when MacKenzie Rowland made a pair of foul shots at 11:16. Eventually Queens got the lead up to 13 points when a Madison Rowland steal led to a Korzevinski layup off an assists from MacKenzie Rowland. The Knights led at the half, 44-36.
A pair of Latasia Ward baskets early in the second half pulled the Purple Knights to within four points, 44-40. Melissa Gardner made two free throws, and Louise Ovner made a three-pointer and QC was up 46-43 with 18:04 left.
The Knights used an 8-1 run in the next two minutes of game time to lead 54-44. The Purple Knights shrank the deficit to five points, 56-51, at 14:08. Queens pulled away from there, building a lead that got as big s 25 points, 93-68, when Madison Rowland sank a free throw with 1:04 left. The Knights won 93-70.
Besides the Rowland sister, Korzevinski finished with 14 points and Gardner had 11. The Knights return to action on Friday, February 7, when they travel to Rochester, New York to face Roberts Wesleyan. The jump is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
