Box Score Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College men's basketball team lost its home opener to Concordia, 66-64, on Wednesday night in a game played in Fitzgerald Gym. Sophomore guard, Diego Maldonado, finished with 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting, barely missing a double-double, as he grabbed nine rebounds.
Part of the reason he hit a career-high was that Maldonado, along with the rest of the Knights, started the game scorching hot from the three-point line. Queens built a 19-3 lead over the first nine minutes of play. Jeremiah Mordi hit a three-pointer to open the scoring. Re'Quan Hopson followed with an elbow jumper. After a pair of Clippers' free throws, Mordi made the score 8-2 for QC, with his second three-pointer of the contest. He scored a game-high 22 points. A Maldonado three at 15:39 made the score 11-2, and Guilherme Brodt scored a put back two minutes later to make the score 13-3. Hopson scored four more points and Brodt made a bucket and the Knights led 19-3. A Keith Williams layup at the 7:46 mark gave QC its largest lead of the game -19 points- when the score was 29-10. Queens led 39-27 at the half.
The Clippers increased their defensive pressure in the second half, which led to them taking a 43-42 lead with 12:55 left in the game. QC followed with a pair of Mordi free throws and a Paul Little jumper, which gave them the lead again, 46-43. The Knights never held the lead again. Mordi scored a pair of free throws with 0:10 remaining, to pull Queens within two points, 66-64. But after forcing a Concordia turnover, Hopson missed a layup at the end of the game that would have sent the contest into overtime.
Mordi had seven boards and five assists. The Queens College men's basketball team returns to action on Tuesday, December 9th, when they host Pace. The opening tip with the Setters is slated for 7:00 PM.
