Flushing, N.Y. – As time ticked away in regulation, with the match between Queens College and Mercy College squared at one-goal apiece, it was junior Pol Narbona who booted home the winner in the 89th minute. The strike gave the Knights a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish, allowing the team's seniors, Jorge Artavia and James Dukas, to be sent off in fairytale fashion.
The match, which had to be rescheduled from its original date on Saturday due to inclement weather, got off to a thrilling start for the Knights when junior Aitor Gurruchaga and Dukas forced the opposing goalkeeper into making two early saves in the 5th minute. The Mavericks would retaliate with a header of their own in the 6th minute that proved a tricky save for Knights' keeper, James Brostowski.
After the initial frenzy, the match would vacillate for much of the first half. A free kick by Michael Vaghetti in the game's 26th minute from right outside the box curled over the defending wall only to be saved by the Mavericks' keeper. A breakaway effort off a headed flick from a Mercy player required another save from Brostowski in the 41st minute. Headed into intermission the score remained 0-0.
Queens College came out of the break aggressively, almost netting the match's opening goal in the 48th minute when a scrum in front of the Mercy goal led to two shots on target. First it was freshmen Daniel Saint Louis who had two shots saved before sophomore Brian Belfont's rebound effort was blocked by a teammate. Belfont would have another chance from the same area in front of the net just two minutes later that required a quick save from the opposing keeper. Both keepers appeared to be in fine form as the match carried on in the half.
Then in the 66th minute, junior forward Paul Sandoval curled a floater into the upper left corner of the net off an assist from sophomore Nicholas Matusewicz for the match's first goal. The Knights would not lead for long, however, as Mercy College was able to equalize in the 71st minute when Haxhi Verjoni headed in a free kick service.
With the score level at 1-1, it was the junior forward from Barcelona, Spain would make sure the seniors ended their Queens College careers in fitting fashion. As he has done multiple times this season, Narbona was able to find the back of the net off a goal kick from Brostowski that found him in the 89th minute. The goal, Narbona's eighth of the season, put the Knights in front, 2-1, and ended up being the game-winner when the Mavericks could not get another chance in.
With the win, Queens College finished the 2014 campaign with an overall record of 5-9-1, going 3-7 in East Coast Conference play.
