Box Score Manchester, N.H. - With less than three minutes remaining in regulation and trailing 1-0, it looked like the Queens College men's soccer team was headed for a defeat, but junior, forward, Pol Narbona scored in the closing minutes to force overtime. He then added a game-winner in the second overtime as the Knights defeated Saint Anselm, 2-1, in a game played in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Tuesday.
The Queens offense was certainly potent in the game, outshooting the Hawks, 21-16. QC came out on the attack early on, as Glen Reid and Michael Vaghetti each had a shot in the opening five minutes. The onslaught continued as Reid hit the post in the 18th minute and Isaiah Kossinne forced Saint Anselm keeper, Stephen McLeod to make a save. It wasn't for the stalwart play of the keeper, the Knights would have likely scored. Queens managed three more shots in the remainder of the half, but none of them found the back of the net and the game was scoreless at the half.
The second 45 started with the Hawks pushing the attack, and QC keeper, James Brostowski was forced to make one of his seven saves off of a header in the 54th minute. Less than a minute later, he wouldn't be so fortunate as Saint Anselm's Sean Smith put a header inside the far post for a 1-0 Hawks' advantage.
The game stayed at the score until the 88th minute, when James Dukas, who was brought on as a substitute, put a cross from the right post to the top of the box where Narbona was waiting. The junior from Barcelona, Spain, calmly beat McLeod in the upper right corner and the game was all square at 1-1. There was no more scoring and the game went into overtime still tied.
In the first overtime, both Dukas and Aitor Gurruchaga forced the keeper to make a save to keep the score even. There was no scoring and the match went into a second overtime.
Seven minutes into the second overtime, Nicholas Matusewicz found Narbona who scored the game winner.
The Knights improved to 2-6 with the victory. The team returns to action on Saturday, October 11, when they host St. Thomas Aquinas at 3:00 PM.
