Strong Second Half Lifts Knights to Fifth Straight Win with 65-56 Victory over St. Thomas Aquinas

Sparkill, N.Y. - The Queens College women's basketball team erased a five-point deficit at halftime by outscoring St. Thomas Aquinas, 37-22 in the second twenty minutes to earn the team's fifth-straight win, a 65-56 triumph from Aquinas Hall in Sparkill, New York on Tuesday.  Three Knights reached double-figures in the win.

QC jumped to a 5-2 lead over the first three-and-a-half minutes of action as Kasheema Besley and MacKenzie Rowland each scored a basket, while Madison Rowland added a free throw.   The game would be tied five more times across the next five minutes of action, with the final tied coming at 15-15 with 11:12 remaining in the half.  From there, the Spartans used the final 11 minutes to build a six-point halftime lead, at 34-28.

Queens opened the second half with a 6-0 run to even the score at 34-all.  The run saw a basket from Madison Rowland and a pair of buckets from Mackenzie Rowland.  A Kristen Olsen jumper at 12:45 put the Spartans up by five, which was their largest lead since the 34-34 tie.  Less than three minutes later, Madison Rowland scored on a put back and the Knights had their first lead of the half, 46-45.  She added a point to complete the three-point-play.

With four minutes left in the half, Joya McFarland made a foul shot to put QC up by eight, 58-50.  They went on to win, 65-56.  With the triumph, Queens improved to 10-3 overall and 6-1 in the East Coast Conference.

Madison Rowland finished with a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds.  She shot 9-17.  MacKenzie Rowland scored 14 on 7-12 shooting, while McFarland shot 6-of-12 en route to 17 points.

The Queens College women's basketball team looks for its sixth straight win on Saturday, January 11 when they travel to Dobbs Ferry, New York to face Mercy College.  The tipoff with the Mavericks is slated for 12:30 PM.
