Box Score Waterbury, Conn. - The Queens College
volleyball team opened its 2013 season with a 3-1 victory over Post
University. The scores in the sets were 25-15, 25-20, 16-25
and 25-18.
The first set opened with the Knights jumping out to a 3-0 lead
on a kill by Arielle DiCocco, an ace from Else Buchmiller and a
Post attack error. After the Eagles responded with a pair of
points to get to within 3-2, Queens opened the score up to 6-2 on
an error, an ace from Xhesi Domi and a kill from Bianca
Steele. Post responded with three straight points and once
again QC's lead was down to one, at 6-5. The next three
points went to the Knights on a pair of kills from Angela Kranz and
another from Steele. Later in the set, QC was up 13-11, and
they used a 6-0 run to take a 19-11 lead and put the set
away. In that scoring spree, points came from three Eagles
errors, a pair of Kranz aces and a Tori Bowser kill. The
final point of the set came from a Steele kill.
The second set began with the Knights getting a 10-4 lead when
Steele and DiCocco recorded a pair of kills to coincide with a
bunch of errors from Post. Eventually a kill from Kranz put
the Knights up 19-13. From there, the Eagles answered with a
7-0 run to take a 20-19 lead. The Knights evened the score at
20-all on a Bowser block and she gave QC a 21-20 advantage with a
kill on the next serve. Queens then rattled off four-straight
points to close out the second set, 25-20.
Set three went to Post, 25-16. The set would be tied at
three different points, the final deadlock coming at 14-14.
From there, the Eagles used a 5-0 run to take a 19-14 lead.
Queens scored another point before Post closed out the set with the
next six points.
The fourth set began with the Knights seizing a 6-1 lead.
Post fought back to close within two points, 15-13, but a kill from
DiCocco and a strong serve from her put the Knights ahead,
17-13. The Eagles got the score back to within two points, at
20-18, but QC put the match away from there. After a Post
service error and a Kranz ace put the Knights ahead 22-18, the
Eagles called a timeout. Following the respite, a DiCocco
kill and an attack error gave QC match point. The match ended
with a kill coming from Steele.
In the match, DiCocco paced the Knights with 14 kills.
Senior, Ceren Kilic recorded 23 assists; while Domi led the team
with 10 digs. The Queens College volleyball team has its home
opener on Tuesday, September 10 when they host Georgian Court at
7:00 PM in the Fitzgerald Gym.
