Box Score

Waterbury, Conn. - The Queens College volleyball team opened its 2013 season with a 3-1 victory over Post University.  The scores in the sets were 25-15, 25-20, 16-25 and 25-18.

The first set opened with the Knights jumping out to a 3-0 lead on a kill by Arielle DiCocco, an ace from Else Buchmiller and a Post attack error.  After the Eagles responded with a pair of points to get to within 3-2, Queens opened the score up to 6-2 on an error, an ace from Xhesi Domi and a kill from Bianca Steele.  Post responded with three straight points and once again QC's lead was down to one, at 6-5.  The next three points went to the Knights on a pair of kills from Angela Kranz and another from Steele.  Later in the set, QC was up 13-11, and they used a 6-0 run to take a 19-11 lead and put the set away.  In that scoring spree, points came from three Eagles errors, a pair of Kranz aces and a Tori Bowser kill.  The final point of the set came from a Steele kill.

The second set began with the Knights getting a 10-4 lead when Steele and DiCocco recorded a pair of kills to coincide with a bunch of errors from Post.  Eventually a kill from Kranz put the Knights up 19-13.  From there, the Eagles answered with a 7-0 run to take a 20-19 lead.  The Knights evened the score at 20-all on a Bowser block and she gave QC a 21-20 advantage with a kill on the next serve.  Queens then rattled off four-straight points to close out the second set, 25-20.

Set three went to Post, 25-16.  The set would be tied at three different points, the final deadlock coming at 14-14.  From there, the Eagles used a 5-0 run to take a 19-14 lead.  Queens scored another point before Post closed out the set with the next six points.

The fourth set began with the Knights seizing a 6-1 lead.  Post fought back to close within two points, 15-13, but a kill from DiCocco and a strong serve from her put the Knights ahead, 17-13.  The Eagles got the score back to within two points, at 20-18, but QC put the match away from there.  After a Post service error and a Kranz ace put the Knights ahead 22-18, the Eagles called a timeout.  Following the respite, a DiCocco kill and an attack error gave QC match point.  The match ended with a kill coming from Steele.

In the match, DiCocco paced the Knights with 14 kills.  Senior, Ceren Kilic recorded 23 assists; while Domi led the team with 10 digs.  The Queens College volleyball team has its home opener on Tuesday, September 10 when they host Georgian Court at 7:00 PM in the Fitzgerald Gym.
