Volleyball Opens East Coast Conference Play with 3-0 Win Over Mercy

Queens, N.Y. - The Queens College volleyball team defeated Mercy College, 3-0, on Tuesday from Fitzgerald Gym, to earn their first East Coast Conference win of the season.  The scores of the sets were 25-19, 25-16, 25-23.

The opening set saw the Mavericks jump to an early, 8-5 lead.  The Knights would eventually tie the score at 9-all, behind a pair of service aces from Else Buchmiller and a kill from Tori Bowser.  The two side would share the lead six more times until the set was tied at 19-19.  From there, the Knights scored six straight points to take the opening stanza, 25-19.  The six points came from four Bowser kills, an Arielle DiCocco kill and a Mercy error.

The second set began with both sides trading points until the score was even at 9-9.  Queens used a 6-0 scoring salvo to pull ahead, 15-9, as points came from kills from DiCocco, Buchmiller and Bianca Steele and three Mavericks' errors.  Eventually Mercy got within five points, at 21-16, but four QC points ended the set quickly.  Kills from Bowser and Steele and a pair of strong serves from Xhesi Domi accounted for the scoring.

The final set saw the Knights take an 11-4 lead early on in play.  Eventually, QC was ahead, 24-17. From there, the Mavericks got hot and ran off six straight points, to pull within one point, at 24-23.  Queens emphatically ended the match on the next point as Ceren Kilic set up Francesca Indoni for the winning kill.

With the win, the Knighs improved to 7-1 overall, and 1-0 in the ECC.  The team continues it ECC schedule on Thursday, September 26, when they travel t Connecticut to face Bridgeport.  The opening serve is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
