Queens, N.Y. - After a surprising run to
qualify for the fifth spot in the East Coast Conference
championship, the Queens College men's basketball team will
face Molloy College in the quarterfinals. The game will
played in Rockville Centre, New York, at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, March
5.
It was a season of ups and downs for head coach Kyrk Peponakis
and the Knights, but they dominated conference play en route to a
11-7 ECC mark. The highlights of the year include a
last-second layup by George Holmes (Gordon Heights, N.Y./Suffolk
C.C.) that helped QC defeat Dowling, as well as a five game winning
streak in the middle of the year and a four-game one to close out
the regular season.
On a personal level, Patrick Parker (Queens, N.Y./Alfred State)
took home ECC Player of the Week honors once. Parker and
Holmes led the team in scoring, at 16.8 PPG and 15.7 PPG,
respectively.
Queens and Molloy met twice in the regular season, and Molloy
won both games by a combined three points. The Lions beat the
Knights, 63-62, on a January 12 meeting in Fitzgerald Gym, while
Molloy beat Queens, 58-56, in the rematch a month later.
