Queens, N.Y. - It had been nearly a month since
the Queens College men's basketball team had last tasted
defeated, but a roster depleted by injuries wasn't able to
overcome the LIU Post Pioneers, in a physical scrape that saw the
Knights fall, 78-60. The loss dropped QC's East Coast
Conference record to 7-5, and to 7-13 overall.
In a game that saw Queens dress just eight players, the Knights
were competitive through the first four-and-a-half minutes of play,
staying even with Pioneers. After that, LIU Post pushed the
lead to 19 points, 30-11, when Tyuan Williams made a jumper with
4:57 remaining in the first half.
From there, the Knights used an 11-4 run to pull within 12, at
34-22, when George Holmes (Gordon Heights, N.Y./Suffolk C.C.) made
a pair of foul shots with 2:08 on the clock. Holmes led the
Knights with 19 points, including 11-of-12 free throws.
During that run, Abe Akanmu (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian)
accounted for five points, with Daniel Watson (Mount Vernon,
N.Y./Mount Vernon) totaling four. When the buzzer for
halftime sounded, the Pioneers led 40-25.
The second half saw the Knights get as close as six points,
after two of Holmes' free throws made the score 63-57 for the
Pioneers at the 5:04 mark. However, QC only scored three
points in the remainder of the game and the winning streak was
halted at five games.
Holmes led Queens with 19 points, while Akanmu had 13 and
Patrick Modzelewski (Brooklyn, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) netted 13
as well.
The Knights return to action on Saturday, February 9, when they
host Dowling at Fitzgerald Gym. The game is slated for 2:00
PM and the men's team will be having its Alumni Day
coinciding with the game against the Golden Lions.
