Queens, N.Y. - In head coach Bet Naumovski's sophomore season, the Queens College women's basketball team has surpassed its win total from a year ago, the latest victory coming as a 74-71 triumph over LIU Post from Fitzgerald Gym on Wednesday. Four Knights players scored double figures in the win.
After securing just a lone win in 2011-12, the win over the Pioneers improved QC's mark to 8-11 overall and 5-7 in the East Coast Conference. In a game marked by stingy defense, the Knights forced 18 turnovers and grabbed eight steals.
The first half opened with LIU Post taking the early lead in the game. They maintained that advantage until just 6:09 was left when Lisanne Comeau (Toronto, Ont./St. Basil-the-Great) found a cutting Kristen Korzevinski (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) for a layup, giving the Knights a 21-20 edge. From there, Queens never relinquished the lead and they built up an eight point halftime cushion, 35-27.
The second half saw the Knights grow their lead to as many as 15 points, 66-51, when leading scorer, Bria Jackson (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) sank a pair of foul shots with 6:15 remaining. LIU Post would chip away at the lead, though, reducing the deficit to as little as a single point, 72-71, when Jalicia Connell made a three-pointer with 0:34 left. From there, Jackson sank a pair of foul shots and the Knights had a 74-71 win.
In the victory, Queens was led by Korzevinski's season-high 23 points, shattering her previous mark of 16 points; which she reached on two separate occasions. After that, Jackson netted 16 points, six assists, six rebounds and was a spectacular 9-of-10 from the charity stripe. Forward Tara Fearon (Bronx, N.Y./Blessed Sacrament) was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field en route to 11 points; while Marie Byrnes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Rutgers Prep) finished with 10.
The Knights return to the hardwood on Saturday, February 9, when they host #21 Dowling College at 2:00 PM. The game follows the women's basketball alumni game, scheduled for earlier in the day.
