Easton, Mass. - Saturday's game between St. Michael's and Queens College would see a new head coach earning his first win with his new team, and despite having four players reach double-figures Queens College and new coach Darryl Jacobs, fell to St. Michael's and their head man, Josh Meyer, 90-76 in the opening round of the Stonehill Classic from Easton, Massachusetts. Patrick Modzelewski led the team with 21 points.
The game began auspiciously for the Knights as Second Team All-ECC player from a year ago, George Holmes, put QC up 5-0 with a three-pointer and a jumper. St. Michael's answered and eventually a pair of Patrick Parker free throws tied the game at 9-9. From there, Queens used a 5-0 run to build a 14-9 lead. Eventually that lead would be erased and the Purple Knighs led 40-30 at the half.
The Knights used the first two plus minutes of the second half to try and erase the double-digit deficit, and they got as close as seven point, 45-38, when Richard Council buried a pail of foul shots. St. Michael's eventually took control again and built a large, twenty point lead. But QC showed some moxie and fought back once again, getting as close as nine points, when a Modzelewski layup made the score 80-71, with 2:30 left. The Purple Knights went on to win, 90-76.
In the game, Modzelewski made 5-of-6 three-pointers en route to his 21 points. Ronald Washington, Jr. came off the bench to score 16, while Holmes contributed 13 and Parker scored 10.
The team concludes play at the Stonehill Classic on Sunday, November 11, when they meet the hosts, Stonehill, at 3:00 PM.
