MacKenzie Rowland Double-Double Paces Knights to Season Opening Win at Pace

Pleasantville, N.Y. - Anyone watching the Queens College women's basketball team play on Saturday, saw a glimpse of what MacKenzie Rowland did last season prior to going down with an injury, as she posted a double-double to lead the Knights to a 70-61 win at Pace in the 2013-14 season Opener.  Rowland finished with 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

The first five minutes of action saw both sides jockeying for position, as they exchanged small leads.  Eventually, the score would be even at 8-8 when reigning ECC Rookie of the Year, Kristen Korzevinski, sunk a foul shot with 14:23 left.

The Setter used the next four minutes to build a small lead and a Shanice Allen layup put them ahead, 18-12 with 10:29 remaining.  The game would be tied three different times in the next five-and-a-half minutes of play, culminating with a Kasheema Besley foul shot at 5:03 that made the score 28-all.  The Knights closed out the half with a 14-6 run to give them a 42-34 lead at the break.  Besley scored five points in that scoring spree.

The second half saw the Knights get the lead up to as many as 12 points, when a Korzevinski layup at 12:39 put QC ahead, 50-38.  Pace then used the next 2:32 of game time to have a 12-0 run and event the score at 50-50.

The teams would be tied two more times with the last one coming at the 3:18 mark.  After that, Queens closed out the game with an 11-2 run and won, 70-61.

For her double-double, Rowland shot 6-for-9.  Her sister, Madison Rowland, made her QC debut and scored 15 points, while Korzevinski chipped in with 14 and Besley added 13.

The Queens College women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, November 16, when they face American International in the first round of the DoubleTree Tip Off Classic.  The game will take place in Colchester, Vermont.
