Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The Queens College women's basketball team fell to 1-1 in East Coast Conference play with a 70-66 defeat to Molloy College on Saturday in Rockville Centre, New York. The team is now 4-2 on the season.
Queens enjoyed a lead before the opening tip as Molloy was whistled for a technical foul. Kasheema Besley made one-of-two free throws and the Knights were ahead 1-0.
From there, the Lions scored five straight points to lead 5-1. Queens responded with a MacKenzie Rowland layup and a pair of foul shots from Madison Rowland to even the score. The teams would go back and forth with the lead until a Marie Byrnes layup evened the score at 19-19 with 8:16 left. The Lions used the final eight minute of the half to go on a 24-12 run to lead 43-31 at the break.
The Knights used the first 2:44 of the second half to pull within three points, at 45-42. Melissa Gardner opened the QC scoring with a pair of foul shots. Madison and MacKenzie Rowland scored the next eight points and Gardner concluded the run with another free throw.
At the 9:56 mark, Queens eliminated the entire deficit as a Marie Byrnes jumper evened the score at 52-52. Less than two minutes later, a Kasheema Besley layup and a Byrnes three-pointer put QC ahead, 60-56. They pushed the lead to eight points, on an Elisabeth Gully layup with 6:50 remaining, making the score 64-56, for the Knights.
Molloy closed out the game with a 14-2 run to win 70-66. The loss ended the Knights three-game-winning streak.
Marie Byrnes came off the bench to score 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting. The Rowland sisters each scored 15 points to pace QC.
The team returns to action on Wednesday, December 4, when they host Holy Family at 6:00 PM.
