Orangeburg, N.Y. - The Queens College men's basketball team saw a late rally fall short as four Knights reached double figures in scoring in an 82-75 loss to Caldwell in the opening round of the Daniel Sullivan Tournament hosted by Dominican College. Patrick Parker led the Knights with 19 points.
The Knights got off to a hot start as George Holmes scored a layup in the first minute, and Patrick Modzelewski buried a three-pointer to put QC ahead, 5-2, at the 18:12 mark. The score went back and forth from there as both sides flipped the lead. Queens last held the lead in the first half at 11:00, when Kyheim Chaplin stole the ball and found Parker who scored on a slashing layup to make the score, 19-16. Caldwell regained the lead and slowly pushed their halftime advantage to 11 points, 43-32.
The Cougars lead got up to 15 points in the second half, when Terik Bridgeman made a layup at 15:41 to put Caldwell up, 48-33. Down 15 with 7:32 to play, the Knights dug in and rallied back into the game. A pair of Chaplin free throws cut the deficit to 13. A Parker layup got the Knights within 11. An Amir Tarif three-point-play pulled the Knights within nine. With 3:30 left, a Modzelewski three made the score 76-69 and a Parker three made the 76-72 with 3:05 remaining. After a Parker free throw and a Cougars layup, a George Holmes layup made it 78-75 with 0:37 left. Caldwell scored the last four points and won 82-75.
Besides Parker's 19, Holmes finished with 17, Tarif had 13 and Tommie Starkes, Jr. finished with ten. Tarif also led the Knights with 10 rebounds.
The team closes out play in the Daniel Sullivan Tournament on Sunday when they face the host, Dominican.
