(Brookville, N.Y.) - Sophomore Marie Byrnes
(Brooklyn, N.Y./Rutgers Prep) posted a double-double performance of
18 points and ten rebounds, but it wasn't enough as Queens
College fell to LIU Post in an East Coast Conference game on
Saturday in Brookville. The Knights are now 4-6 on the season
and 1-2 in ECC play.
The first five minutes of action saw neither side take a
commanding lead, but the Pioneers led 9-6 after a Chelsea Williams
three-pointer at 15:03. Tara Fearon (Bronx, N.Y./Blessed
Sacrament) quickly responded with a pair of jump shots on
consecutive trips and the Knights regained the lead, 10-9, with
14:12 left. The sixth tie of the half came when Byrnes nailed
a bucket that evened the score at 28-all with 5:39 left. The
eight tie of the half came on a Bria Jackson (Rochester,
N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) foul shot and Byrnes gave the Knights the lead
on a basket with 0:53 remaining in the half.
However, it was the Pioneers that owned the lead at the half as
they used a 5-0 run in the final minute to take a 40-37 advantage
into the locker room.
Post opened the second half with an 8-0 run that ended when
Byrnes made a bucket at 17:09 to bring the Knights within 48-39.
Six-and-a-half minutes later, Kristen Korzevinski (New Hyde Park,
N.Y./New Hyde Park) and Byrnes scored a layup and two free throws
and QC was within three points, at 52-9, but they would get no
closer as LIU Post pulled away for the 82-69 win.
Jackson led the Knights with 21 points and was one of three
Queens players to reach double figures as Lisanne Comeau (Toronto,
Ont./St. Basil-the-Great) finished with 11 and Byrnes posted the
double-double.
The Knights return to action on Wednesday, January 9, when they
face Dowling at 5:00 PM in Oakdale, N.Y. They return home for
an ECC matchup with Molloy on Saturday, January 12, at 2:00 PM.
