(Flushing, N.Y.) - Wednesday night's game
between Queens College and NYIT from Fitzgerald Gym had so much
more than the outcome coming down to the final minutes as the
Knights triumphed, 82-77. The game featured lead changes, hot
shooting, and a massive comeback and in the end, QC won its fourth
straight game to improve to 6-12 overall and 6-4 in the East Coast
Conference.
The Knights were at a disadvantage before the opening tip as
they were whistled for a technical foul during warm-ups, so the
Bears made a pair of foul shots to put NYIT on top, 2-0 before the
game even began.
From there, QC used a balanced scoring effort to build a big
lead in the first half, as every member of the starting five
finished in double-figures in scoring for the Knights.
However, it was forward, Patrick Modzelewski (Brooklyn,
N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) who had the hot hand early on as he nine
points at the break courtesy of making three-of-five three pointers
in the half. The Knights led by as many as 19 points in the
first half, when Modzelewski put them ahead, 43-24, with a
three-pointer at the 1:36 mark. Pat Parker (Queens,
N.Y./Alfred State) led all scorers at the break with 12
points. QC couldn't miss in the first 20 minutes as
they shot 53.6% from the field and 53.8% from behind the
three-point arc.
The second half saw the Bears chip away at the QC lead,
eventually getting within four points in the final minute when Phil
Izevbhal made two of his game-high 22 points to bring NYIT within
81-77. From there, George Holmes (Gordon Heights,
N.Y./Suffolk C.C.) sealed the victory with a free throw in the
closing seconds.
The Knights shot 52.9% for the game as Modzelewski led the team
with 17 points. Parker finished with 16, while Holmes added
15 with Abe Akanmu (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) and Daniel Watson
(Mt. Vernon, N.Y./Mt. Vernon) contributing a dozen each with Akanmu
and Kevin Nascimento (Harlem, N.Y./Genesee C.C.) giving out six
assists apiece.
The QC men's basketball team will look for its fifth
straight win on Saturday, February 2, when the team faces St.
Thomas Aquinas in an East Coast Conference game. The contest
with the Spartans is scheduled to begin at 3:00 PM.
