Washington, D.C. (January 23, 2013) – The Knights men's basketball team improved to 4-4 in the East Coast Conference after a 70-68 win against the University of the District of Columbia \in our nation's capital on Wednesday.
The Knights got off to a quick start in the first half, leading by as much as seven midway through the period. QC got production from their season's leading scorer, George Holmes (Gordon Heights, N.Y./Suffolk C.C.), who posted 13 points in the opening stanza. UDC climbed back into it, eventually taking a slim 37-34 lead into the locker room thanks to a 13-point first half performance by UDC guard, Michael Terry.
The Knights marched onto the court in the second half poised to get a win, going on a quick 6-0 run, including four points from sophomore Patrick Modzelewski (Brooklyn, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) in first two minutes of the half. The Knights would maintain a lead before UDC once again would take a 56-53 advantage midway through the second. While Holmes led the team in with 10 points in the half, it was sophomore Abe Akanmu (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) who nailed a clutch jumper to put the Knights ahead, 70-68 with 1:07 left in regulation. In the end, it was a UDC miss and a Knights defensive board that gave QC their second straight victory.
The Knights men's basketball team will next travel to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. for a meeting with ECC opponent Mercy College on Saturday January 26th with a 3 PM start.
