Washington, D.C. (January 23, 2013) – The Knights women's basketball team improved to 3-5 in the East Coast Conference after a close win against the University of the District of Columbia, 70-64, on Wednesday in our nation's capital.
The Knights took a 33-30 lead into the locker room after a strong showing the majority of the first half. With 10:18 left in the first half, freshman Kristen Korzevinski (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) drained a three-pointer to give the Knights a 14-12 lead. Queens never trailed after that, and were tied just two times the rest of the half, with sophomore Marie Byrnes (Brookyln, N.Y./Rutgers Prep) laying it in to give Queens a 33-30 at the end of the half.
Much like the guys' start to the second half, the women went on a 7-0 run to open up the second twenty minutes, including a three-point basket from both senior Bria Jackson (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) and Byrnes. With 5:24 to play, UDC usurped the lead from the Knights, but QC came back behind consecutive baskets from Byrnes, which give the Knights a 68-64 lead, a lead that would hold up for the remainder of the game. Byrnes led the squad with a total of 20 points in the game.
The Knights women's basketball team will travel to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. for a meeting with ECC opponent Mercy College on Saturday afternoon for a 1 PM start.
