Flushing, N.Y. (January 19, 2013) - The Queens
College men's basketball team took one step closer to a .500
conference record with a 75-66 win over Roberts Wesleyan on
Saturday from Fitzgerald Gym. With the victory, the Knights
are now 3-12 overall and 2-5 in the East Coast Conference.
It was the Redhawks who built a seven-point cushion early,
capped by a Devin Grmes layup that put Roberts Wesleyan up 10-3,
three minutes into play. From there, the Knights responded
with an 11-3 run that gave QC a 14-13 lead at the 13:29 mark.
In that run, the Knights got two points each from Kevin Nascimento
(Harlem, N.Y./Genesee C.C.), Pat Piasecki (Coram, N.Y./Longwood)
and Abe Akanmu (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) and five points from
George Holmes (Gordon Heights, N.Y./Suffolk C.C.).
The Redhawks regained the lead immediately and finally the
Knights took the lead for good when Piasecki connected on a
three-point-play with 4:40 remaining. Queens College took a
41-34 advantage into halftime.
The second half saw Roberts Wesleyan slowly close the gap as
they got within a single point, 55-54, when Grimes threw down a
dunk at the 7:42 mark. The Knights pushed the lead out from
there and made their foul shots down the stretch as they went on to
win, 75-66.
Holmes came off the bench to score a game-high 25 points.
He was a perfect 10-of-10 from the charity line. Patrick
Parker (Queens, N.Y./Alfred State) chipped in with 15 points.
The Knights forced Roberts Wesleyan into 22 turnovers and
outrebounded the Redhawks 31-27.
Queens College returns to the hardwood on Wednesday, January 23,
when the Knights travel to Washington, D.C. to face UDC. The
game time with the Firebirds is 5:00 PM.
