Flushing, N.Y. (January 19, 2013) – The
Queens College women's basketball team had one of those games
that every coach lives for. The Knights used a tenacious,
full-court press, crisp passing and solid shooting to defeat
Roberts Wesleyan, 68-55, in Fitzgerald Gym on Saturday.
The game started out close over the first five minutes of game
time as both sides exchanged the lead until the Redhawks built a
seven point lead, 17-10 on an Ashley Cianfriglia three-pointer at
10:54. The Knights closed to within one point as Bria Jackson
(Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) and Kristen Korzevinski (New Hyde
Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) hit consecutive three-pointers. The
Knights took the lead again when Marie Byrnes (Brooklyn,
N.Y./Rutgers Prep) scored two of her team-high 17 points at the
5:27 mark to give QC a 21-20 advantage. Through this all,
Roberts Wesleyan regained the momentum and led 34-29 at the
break.
The second half saw the Knights take the lead for good when
Jackson hit back-to-back free throws at the 16:21 mark. The
team held the Redhawks to just 21 second-half points en route to
the 68-55 win.
Byrnes finished with 17 points. Korzivinski added 14
points, and, in just her second career game with the Knights,
forward Takiya Webb (Rochester, N.Y./C.G. Finney) recorded a
double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. She was a
perfect 5-of-5 from the field. The Knights posted 20 assists
to just 18 turnovers, and they outrebounded Roberts Wesleyan,
44-35.
Queens College returns to the hardwood on Wednesday, January 23,
when the Knights travel to Washington, D.C. to face UDC. The
game time with the Firebirds is 7:00 PM.
