FLUSHING, N.Y. - Senior forward Khalil McDonald (Queens Village, N.Y.) became the 25th player in Queens College men's basketball history to eclipse the 1,000 career points mark Wednesday night at Fitzgerald Gymnasium, as the Knights competed in East Coast Conference action against St. Thomas Aquinas College.
Despite a career-best 25-point effort from freshman guard Abe Akanmu (Staten Island, N.Y.) and an 11-point, nine-rebound effort from McDonald, QC dropped a 65-62 decision to the visiting Spartans.
Queens whittled an eight-point deficit (61-53) with two-plus minutes remaining down to a 64-62 margin after a pair of free throws by Akanmu (8-for-10 FG; 4-for-5 3FG; 5-for-6 FT). However, a potential game-tying 3-pointer was off the mark in the closing seconds.
Sophomore forward Pat Piasecki (Coram, N.Y.) was 6-for-9 from the field en route to 13 points, while classmate and guard Jeremiah Mordi (Valley Stream, N.Y.) nearly missed a double-double with eight points, nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and three blocked shots.
Head coach Kyrk Peponakis's Knights are back in ECC action Saturday afternoon (Feb. 4), when they welcome the University of the District of Columbia to Fitzgerald for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
