Patrick Modzelewski's (Brooklyn, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy)
season-high 25 point outburst led the Knights to a 72-68 win over
Mercy, in a game played at Fitzgerald Gym on Saturday.
Modzelewski was one of three QC players to reach double-figures in
scoring.
Both teams entered play looking for their first win of the
season and early on QC took control as Patrick Parker (Queens,
N.Y./Alfred State) scored a three-point-play to break a 2-2
stalemate at 18:42. From there, neither side could get much
of a lead until the game was level at 22-all with 4:47 left in the
half.
Queens then closed out the half with a 14-6 run to lead 36-28 at
intermission. In that run, Modzelweski scored six points,
Daniel Watson (Mt. Vernon, N.Y./Mt. Vernon) chipped in with four,
while Kevin Nascimento (Harlem, N.Y./Genesee C.C.)and Pat Piasecki
(Coram, N.Y./Longwood) each had a bucket.
The second half saw the Queens lead grow to a game-high 14
points courtesy of a Parker layup at 17:36. The Mavericks
then had the unenviable task of chipping away at the deficit as
they rattled off a 14-0 run to even the score at 46-all when Khiry
Gordon scored with 11:43 remaining.
Queens once again went back to work and used the next eight
minutes of game time to build an eight point lead, capping the edge
with a pair of Abe Akanmu free throws at 3:24 that made the score
65-57.
Mercy pulled within two points in the closing seconds as Gordon
made a three-point-play with 0:50 remaining. Queens had the
answer once again those, courtesy of Modzelweski.
With less than 20 seconds left, Modzelewski was open in front of
his own bench, and he calmly buried a clutch three-point giving the
Knights a five points lead at 71-66. Queens held on for the
72-68 win.
QC is now 1-5 overall and 1-0 in East Coast Conference
play. For the Knights, Watson finished with 11 points while
Parker contributed with 10. The team returns to action
on Saturday, December 8, when they face NYIT at 4:00 PM.
