FLUSHING, N.Y. – Junior Danny Stoker (London, England) netted three consecutive goals, while classmate Peter Touros (Bellerose, N.Y.) and senior Santiago Bedoya (E. Elmhurst, N.Y.) added one marker apiece Thursday afternoon, as the Queens College men's soccer team won its season opener by a 5-1 count over visiting Wilmington (Del.), in head coach Carl Christian's first game coaching the squad at his alma mater.
Christian, a 1991 graduate of Queens (1-0), is also entering his fourth season in 2011 as the women's soccer head coach.
The Wildcats (0-1) opened the scoring in the 13th minute of play, when Tom Quaranta got on the board off a pass from Jose Hernandez.
From there, it was all QC as Stoker headed home a cross from junior Grant Edick (Clearwater, Fla.) in the 18th minute, then put the hosts ahead for good when he blasted home a 20-yarder to the upper-right corner less than four minutes later.
Stoker completed his hat trick 3:14 into the second half when sophomore Metri Abdul-Karim (Oceanside, N.Y.) served him the ball at the six-yard box, before Touros (82nd minute) and Bedoya (88th minute) tallied in the final nine minutes of action to put the game away.
Queens outshot the visitors by a 17-13 count, while both teams served in four corner kicks. QC keeper Demetrios Touros (Bellerose, N.Y.) made three first-half saves to earn the victory, while Spyros Stergiotis made six saves in the loss.
Christian's side is back in action Saturday night, when the Knights travel to Manchester, N.H., for a 5 p.m. kickoff at East Region mainstay, Southern New Hampshire University.
