Volleyball Sweeps Past Mercy, 3-0

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College volleyball team won its second consecutive match Tuesday night at Fitzgerald Gymnasium, hitting .231 on offense while posting seven total blocks en route to a 3-0, East Coast Conference sweep over visiting Mercy College (25-15, 25-17, 25-20).

The Knights (8-17, 3-9 ECC) received a 13-kill, 14-dig output to go with three assisted blocks from senior middle blocker, Jovana Pavlovic (Belgrade, Serbia), while junior outside hitter Suzanne Byrne (Richmond, B.C.) hit .333 (8-1-21), served four aces and passed six digs. Freshmen Christina Hickey (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and Rita Romeo (Glen Oaks, N.Y.) registered four blocks (one solo) and 10 digs, respectively.

After falling behind on the first two points to start the match, Queens ripped off eight straight against the visiting Mavericks (8-24, 2-9 ECC) to take control of the first set. The lead got as high as 23-11, en route to taking a 1-0 lead.

A 12-2 start in the second set paced the Knights on their way to an eight-point triumph, while a four-point breakaway from an 18-all deadlock in the third stanza helped QC to seal the match.

Head coach Leanna Taylor's Knights are back in ECC action Thursday night (Nov. 3), when they travel to Brookville, N.Y., for a 7 p.m. match at C.W. Post in Pratt Recreation Center.
