DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Senior middle blocker Jovana Pavlovic scored 26 points on 19 kills (.447 hitting pct.), five aces, four assisted blocks and 14 digs Thursday night, as the Queens College volleyball team forced a fifth set before ultimately falling by a 3-2 count in an East Coast Conference match at Mercy College (25-22, 25-16, 13-25, 20-25, 15-9).
Pavlovic (Belgrade, Serbia) had just two attacking errors on 38 attempts in hitting .447, while senior Stephanie Schroeder (Lynbrook, N.Y.) led all players with six blocks (one solo) while adding 15 assists and six kills for the visiting Knights (2-9, 0-5 ECC). Freshman defensive specialist Rita Romeo (Glen Oaks, N.Y.; 10 digs) and junior outside hitter Suzanne Byrne (Richmond, B.C.; 14 digs and five kills) served up three aces apiece for QC.
The host Mavericks (7-11, 2-2 ECC) used a 4-1 run at the end of the opening set to close out a 25-22 edge, before opening up a 10-4 lead en route to a nine-point victory in set two.
Queens got back into things with an 8-2 spurt to close out a 12-point victory in set three, before out-hitting Mercy by a .296-.000 count in the fourth set to force the fifth and deciding stanza.
In the fifth set, a kill by Pavlovic knotted things up at 4-all. From there, the Mavericks ran off seven straight points to take control of the match.
Head coach Leanna Taylor's Knights are back in action Saturday (Oct. 8), when they travel to Garden City, N.Y., for a tri-match against Le Moyne and host Adelphi, at 1 and 3 p.m., respectively.
