Men's Soccer's Unbeaten Streak Snapped in Heartbreaking Fashion at NYIT, 2-1

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Junior Danny Stoker netted a match-tying penalty kick in the 75th minute of play Saturday afternoon at President's Stadium, but the Queens College men's soccer team saw its seven-match unbeaten streak come to a heartbreaking halt, as host New York Institute of Technology scored the game-winner with less than three minutes before full time en route to a 2-1, East Coast Conference victory.

NYIT (9-2-2, 3-1-1 ECC) took the lead in the 23rd minute, when Vinny Caccavale converted a penalty kick past Queens (6-6-3, 3-1-1) starting keeper, senior Demetrios Touros (Bellerose, N.Y.). With that tally, QC's shutout streak was snapped at 551:31.

The Knights stayed close throughout, and received the break it needed in the 75th minute when Stoker (London, England), who moved up midway through the contest to a striker position from his recently commonplace central back role, was taken down in the penalty area. The two-time ECC Player of the Week then stepped up to the penalty spot and converted for his 11th goal of the season, knotting things up at 1-all.

Queens continued to press in an attempt to try to win the match in regulation. However, the Bears caught the Knights on a counterattack, as Matthew DiDonna cranked home his 10th marker of the campaign with 2:49 to go before the end of regulation to send their squad to the victory.

NYIT held a 15-6 edge on the afternoon in shots, as well as a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Touros and junior substitute, Nelson Restrepo (E. Elmhurst, N.Y.; 28-plus minutes of action) made three saves apiece to keep the match close for QC.

Head coach Carl Christian's Queens side is back in ECC action next Saturday (Oct. 22), when the Knights play host to presently third-ranked (4-0-1 ECC) C.W. Post at 2 p.m.
