Knights win close one with NYIT 78-74

The Queens College Women's basketball team used a monster game by sophomore Chloe Johnson to help propel themselves over a gritty NYIT Bears team. Johnson had a game and team high 27 points along with 8 rebounds to improve her Knights to 5-10 (4-4 ECC). With the loss the bears fall to 4-10 (2-7 ECC).

Sophomore forward Chloe Johnson paced the Knights for their victory over the bears 78-74. Johnson was 8-18 shooting while going 4-7 from beyond the arc and 7-8 from the charity stripe for a game high 27 points. Johnson also grabbed 8 rebounds in the contest, two shy of a double-double. Junior Amanda Bartlett added 15 points of her own on 5-8 shooting while adding 5 assists. The scoring was even between the two teams. NYIT shot 41.5% from the field compared to Queens' 43.3%. The discrepancy was about the same from the charity stripe as the Bears shot 83.3% to the Knights 81.8%.

The bears opened up the scoring for the game going on a quick 5-0 run. However, Queens then rallied with a 13-0 run to claim a 19-11 advantage with 12:11 left to play. The run was sparked by a free throw from Bartlett after NYIT's bench was issued a technical foul and included three buckets from beyond the arc from Bartlett, Johnson and Jessica Fairweather. The Knights pushed their lead to 30-18 on a jumper from Bartlett with 7:27 on the clock. NYIT refused to back down and fought their way back into the game, The Knights were only able to take a one point lead into half up, 34-33.

The Knights came out firing in the second half as Johnson tallied seven points in the opening two minutes. A wide open layup from Caitlin Hopkins then gave Queens a 43-35 lead. However the Bears would battle back and take the lead from the Knights 68-67 with 5:16 left to play. Cadie Chu was the hero coming down the stretch. Chu's layup with less than a minute left all but put the dagger in NYIT. Queens would finish up on its opponent 78-74.

Next up for the Knights will be the visiting Molloy College Lions. Tip off is scheduled for Monday Jan. 17th at 5:00 pm.  Live stats and video can be found here on our page under the schedules tab.
