The Knights travelled to Cambridge, MA this past weekend to
participate in the Collegiate Water Polo Association's Northern
Division Championship. The Knights, who were seeded 6th
entering the tournament, were matched up against MIT (#3) in the
first round on Saturday, November 6. The last time these
teams met, Queens lost by just one point, with a final score
of 15-14. This game, though low-scoring, was just as
suspenseful, as Queens remained close to the home team
throughout. A late penalty on behalf of QC
however, set MIT up for the game-winning goal. The final
score was 6-5 in favor of Massachusetts.
Later that afternoon, Queens was matched up against 7th-seeded
Iona College (after the team's earlier loss to #2, Brown).
Once again, Queens remained close throughout the contest, matching
Iona's goals. The hard-fought game ended in disappointment
for the Knights however, as they were outscored by just one point
for the second time that day.
Tournament play continued on Sunday, with Queens opening against
Connecticut College. Connecticut (seeded 8th heading into the
tournament), battled hard--scoring 10 goals in the game--but could
not keep up with the Knights. Queens outscored their opponent
almost 2-1, ending the game with a score of 17-10.
The Knights, who hoped for a chance at earning a spot in
the CWPA's Eastern Tournament, completed the tournament in 7th
place. Representing the North in the tournament will be St.
Francis (1), Brown University (2), Fordham University (3), and QC
rival, MIT (4).
