Coach & Administrator, 1953–1982
Guido F. Foglia (1922–2011) majored in biology and
chemistry at Queens in the early 1940s, playing varsity and
semi-pro basketball. After serving as an infantryman in
WWII’s European campaign, he received an MS in biochemistry
from NYU, then joined the Physical Education Dept., teaching health
and coaching basketball, tennis, and soccer. In 1953, the first
year he coached soccer, his team made the state finals. Guido went
on to earn a PhD in applied physiology from Columbia and became
department chair in the mid-1960s, collaborating on innovative
programs such as the QC Institute for Exceptional Children and the
QC Laboratory of Applied Physiology. As an administrator his focus
was on increasing the diversity of courses and expanding access to
sports and athletics to the whole student body.
